Markforged has released an amazing new material for the MarkTwo 3D printer!

Onyx is a remarkably tough nylon mixed with chopped carbon.

The result are parts with stiffness equal to or greater than any pure thermoplastic material available for professional 3D printers and a breathtakingly beautiful finish.

Tough and Stiff

Onyx has the toughness of nylon, the stiffness of fiber reinforced plastic, and a heat deflection temperature of 145C! Onyx can be used alone, or further reinforced with Markforged’s standard composite 3D printing process with embedded continuous carbon fiber, Kevlar®, and fiberglass layers.

Amazing finish

Onyx prints out in a stunning matte black finish that’s perfect for end use parts. No post-processing necessary!

We put it to the test

3 HTi test Engineer Bruce Bodnyk has already put Onyx to the test by reprinting his 3D printed mini-drone x-body that had been previously done in nylon and carbon fiber.

“The resulting body is noticeably stiffer than the previous one and the black matt finish makes the parts standout visually. I can easily see this new Onyx material being the base material by choice rather than the standard nylon, unless you need the flexibility of the nylon in a part. By incorporating carbon fiber into the nylon, even smaller part geometry can now benefit from the properties of carbon fiber.”

A word of caution – if you plan to run both nylon and Onyx on your machine, you should buy a 2nd print head so that you have one print head for nylon and a second for Onyx. Running Onyx thru a print head will “condition” the head for Onyx and make it unsuitable for nylon.
